Timo Werner joining Chelsea may lead to Man Utd missing

Timo Werner has now been confirmed as a Chelsea player for next season and that could reportedly lead to Manchester United missing out on another transfer target. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperate to bolster his attacking options ever since last summer when the club failed to replace Romelu Lukaku.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have both impressed, while Mason Greenwood has emerged as a talent of the future, but Solskjaer still wants to bring in an out-and-out striker. While Werner was strongly tipped to join Liverpool, United had also held an interest in stealing the striker away from RB Leipzig.

It means Leipzig will be looking for a replacement in the summer and Le10 Sport claim they have identified Wissam Ben Yedder as the ideal option.

Monaco are said to be open to negotiating a deal to sell Ben Yedder despite him only having joined last summer.

It is claimed the French club are demanding £36million to entertain selling the 29-year-old, who scored more than half of Monaco’s goals in Ligue 1 this past season.

United though have also been tracking Ben Yedder for several months and have even made contact with the forward’s representatives.

But when Liverpool pulled out of negotiations as they weren’t prepared to pay Werner’s release clause, Chelsea swooped in to agree personal terms.Odion Ighalo has had his loan spell extended, but reports have suggested the United boss will still target another forward in the summer transfer window.

I stayed in the hotel along with a few others, including staff

“Captaining your country is a privilege but a challenge on a different scale to captaining a club,” said Rooney. “ You’re not with your players every day, the off-field commitments are huge — and with England a significant duty is having to help negotiate the players’ commercial payments. “It’s your responsibility to welcome new players and settle them into the squad. I always made sure I hung around the games room and coffee area a lot during the day, so I was there for players — especially new ones — to talk to. “The media duties are more intense. You face the country’s leading journalists — and not all of them think you should be captain. “Some press conferences are tough. In 2015, when France played at Wembley following the Paris attacks, before the pre-match conference I remember sitting in the office with Roy and (FA chief executive) Martin Glenn and disagreeing with the FA’s briefing. “We knew, because of the sensitivities, there would be difficult questions that should be answered carefully and clearly but the FA advised we say the events in Paris were tragic but not for us to talk about. I said, ‘No, we’re all adults, we have to say how we feel.’ We had to speak from the heart. People would have seen through rehearsed answers. “I went into every captain’s press conference wanting to be honest and there are tricks. If you want to give a particular answer, you make sure you get asked the question. At Euro 2016, Raheem Sterling was going through a tough time, facing unfair criticism, so via the FA’s press officers I made sure a journalist asked me a question that allowed me to defend him.”

Rooney has grown used to dealing with the media spotlight ever since he burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old at Everton in 2002. Though he is widely praised for being one of the best players of his generation, his high profile has often led to less savoury headlines.

Women’s Super League abandoned due to coronavirus

It remains to be decided who will be champions of the 2019-20 English women’s top flight, with both Manchester City and Chelsea having claims

The 2019-20 Women’s Super League (WSL) has been ended early due to the coronavirus outbreak, it has been confirmed.

The top flight of English women’s football will have its champions, plus matters of relegation and European qualification, decided on the basis of “sporting merit”, the Football Association confirmed in a statement on Monday.

It has not yet been declared how “sporting merit” will be determined, with both Manchester City and Chelsea having claims to the championship.

City were the league leaders when the season was initially postponed in March, however the Blues would be ranked first if the league was determined by points per game (PPG).

Bottom club Liverpool look set to be relegated, with their position the same both in current standings and PPG, while Aston Villa would be promoted as they lead the second-tier Championship on both metrics.

Regular title and European contenders Arsenal will miss out on the Champions League, with positions in the premier women’s football continental club competition going only to the top two finishers in the league.

The FA’s statement read: “The FA Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship Board has today confirmed the decision to end the 2019/20 season, with immediate effect.

Waratahs wary of becoming ‘vultures’ as Reds

Negotiations did not progress at all on Thursday, with sources telling the Herald the relationships between the Reds and the three players is now reaching the point where it is unlikely they will play for the club again. Not only is there tension between the trio and coach Brad Thorn, there is also open hostility between the QRU and the players’ manager Anthony Picone.

Towering talent Hockings – who was listed as a player of national interest last month – is off contract at the end of this season and is now leaning towards taking up an offer to play in the Japanese Top League at the start of next year.

If the situation in Queensland proves untenable, Rugby Australia will try and find a new home for Rodda and Lucas at one of the three other Super Rugby franchises, as they have contracts which run until the end of 2023.

Rodda and Lucas could join Hockings in Japan if RA director of rugby Scott Johnson is unable to clear a path to another Australian club, and the pair break contract.

After a lacklustre start to the Super Rugby season the Waratahs could certainly do with a lock of Rodda’s stature but Penney said the club did not want to be seen as “vultures”.

“It’s a really unfortunate situation for them, up there,” Penney said.

“The landscape is changing for everybody, across all sports. The last thing you want to be seen doing is be the vulture hanging around a situation like that.

Man Utd make transfer decision on Diogo Dalot

Manchester United are determined to keep hold of full-back Diogo Dalot despite strong interest from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports. The 21-year-old has struggled to nail down a starting place in United’s first team since his £19 million move from FC Porto in 2018. Dalot has suffered multiple injuries, making just 10 appearances across all competitions so far this season. But according to ESPN, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will ignore interest from top European clubs and instead keep the defender at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian boss has favoured Luke Shaw and £50m summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who may prove difficult to displace in the full-back positions.

However, Dalot’s ability to play on either side of the pitch could help his chances of earning more regular game time if he can stay fit. If the Premier League returns next month, the Portuguese defender should be available for United’s nine remaining fixtures.

Arsenal must give Mikel Arteta time, warns Ian Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes the club have appointed the right man in Mikel Arteta but says the board must give the Spaniard the time he needs to succeed at the Emirates. The Spaniard replaced Unai Emery at the club last December after the former Paris Saint-Germain was sacked due to an awful run of form. Arsenal’s results have picked up under Arteta but not so considerably that the Spaniard’s start could be deemed a success. However, Wright believes improvements have been made in a number of areas that will eventually lead to the club getting better results.

If we’re looking at somebody as a coach with ambition and drive and determination then, without a shadow of a doubt, we’ve got the right person,’ Wright told SPORF.

‘I think you can see that with the intensity, the energy and the passion that the players have got. ‘I did an interview with David Luiz the other day and when you listen to him speak about Mikel Arteta and what he wants and what he expects and the fitness and the drive that the players now have and you can see that there was a change at Arsenal.

‘People are saying we’ve drawn a lot of games but there was a change in the output of the players, the intensity, the determination to try and execute the manager’s philosophy.

Brandin Cooks says Texans stacked

The Houston Texans made one of the most criticized moves of the offseason when they decided to send four-time Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals. While it never helps to part ways with one of the best wide receivers in the league, adding to the criticism was the fact that the Texans only received a running back, and second-round pick and what was essentially a swap of fourth-round picks in return. However, the Texans did trade for former Los Angeles Rams wideout Brandin Cooks, acquire Randall Cobb through free agency and draft Isaiah Coulter during the 2020 NFL Draft, but is that exactly enough to replace the kind of production Hopkins brought to this team?

That is the burning question the Texans are facing entering this season, as Hopkins has recorded five 1,000-yard seasons over the last six years and caught 54 touchdown passes since the Texans selected him with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Cooks believes that the Texans’ wide receiving corps is underrated, and that there are several special players who will be able to thrive with quarterback Deshaun Watson.

“You know I look at it from the standpoint of first and foremost you talk about a guy in Hopkins who is just a special player,” Cooks told James Palmer of the NFL Network. “So you look at it and there’s no question on why you want to continue to get the ball to him because he makes things happen. But now I think what we have is we have so many special guys in this room who can do it all. One of the biggest things I’ve always thought as a receiver is when you’re stacked on a team with multiple receivers, you have a better chance of winning consistently and going far, because you can never just key on one guy. I think that unselfishness in the room I feel for the guys already is going to do us justice in the long run for sure.”

You have to respect Becton for saying that reaching

When you look at the roster, it actually looks solid — at least on paper. Darnold still appears to be the quarterback of the future, Le’Veon Bell, Frank Gore and Perine make up an interesting backfield and the Jets also have a couple of intriguing wideouts in Jamison Crowder, Breshad Perriman and Mims. The offensive line has been upgraded as well, and the Jets also picked up some interesting pieces on defense in free agency. Pierre Desir and Patrick Onwuasor are a couple of underrated additions and New York is still reportedly in the running for former Tennessee Titans cornerback Logan Ryan.

If you’re now feeling optimistic about the Jets’ roster heading into the 2020 season, you’ll quickly lose that feeling when you see their regular-season schedule. Earlier this offseason, CBS Sports NFL writer John Breech broke down the 2020 strength of schedule for all 32 NFL teams based on combined opponent winning percentage in 2019. Despite finishing third place in the AFC East, the Jets will face the second-hardest strength of schedule in 2020. For a complete look at every team’s strength of schedule, check out Breech’s breakdown here.

Even when you base the strength of schedule on the over/under win totals for each team’s opponents during the 2020 season at William Hill Sportsbook, the Jets’ path doesn’t change much. New York will go from facing the second-toughest schedule in the league to facing the third-toughest. For a complete look at every team’s strength of schedule using this methodology, check out CBS Sports NFL writer Jared Dubin’s full breakdown here.
